The Maker and The System
Workshop at Maker Circle, Chengdu, China. 2019
As part of Living Research with the British Council.
Bringing together a focus group of chinese craftspeople and makers in the city of chengdu (which was about to instill its own compulsory recycyling laws for the first time), asking them to explore their relationships to the circular economy through material participation.
We exolored how the materials that participants chose to use were associated with how they had incorporated concepts about circularity into their practice. Inviting them to take on a role within the system of production such as transport, design and manufacture, and imagine what a completely sustainable system might look like. These interactions fostered a collaborative, hands-on environment, and participants engaged thoughtfully in critical reflections about their own relationship to and current perception of circular practice in design and making
