	Sophie Huckfield (she/they) is a working class artist, designer and writer.&#38;nbsp;
Their practice is collaborative, political and site-specific. Underpinned by the concept of
polyphony and intersectional feminist practice, their work is concerned with platforming and
reframing overlooked voices, histories, stories and experiences, which connect to themes
around labour, technology, craft, social-class, and (de)industrialisation.
When developing work she draws on archival and research materials to co-produce
multidisciplinary artworks which move between video, sound, repurposed tools and sculpture,
installations and writings.
Previously they have exhibited, performed and screened at The Barbican, The Design
Museum, Dutch Design Week, London Design Festival, Two Queens, Vivid Projects,
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Eastside Projects amongst others. Alongside been
commissioned for British Art Show 9 Partner Schools program with Arts Connect and
Wolverhampton Museum and Art Gallery.
They published non-fiction book OUTWORK with Multistory and Historic England
funded through The Everyday Heritage Grant: Celebrating Working Class Histories in 2023.
Currently, they are Stanley Picker Fellow at Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston, Developing a longterm project on the history of The Lucas Plan.&#38;nbsp;
Alongside ongoing project Lady Ludd, a sonic feminist and queer reframing of the Luddite Movement, developed as part of the Near Now Fellowship at Broadway in Nottingham.

Attack Decay Sustain Release was a live, evolving exhibition at Stanley Picker Gallery exploring sound, time and collective making. Throughout the exhibition, three artists: Sophie Huckfield, Abbas Zahedi and Nnena Kalu with Action Space &#38;amp; Rebecca Kressley, each took over the gallery for three weeks,.Developing sound-based experiments, performances and events, to explore how sound is employed within, and influences upon, their individual artistic practices; whether as a primary medium in itself, as a by-product of creative production, or as a soundtrack to the act of making.
Audiences and participants were invited to visit during the listed residency days, when the artists were working on site, and visit on the days between to hear, see and experience the works in their various stages of development as they accumulated in the spaces, both physically and sonically, layered over their alternate weeks in residence and culminated in a combined finale to conclude the programme.
Rehearsing and playing on the augmented loom as Lady Ludd, Sophie Huckfield collaborated with Art and Design Foundation Students at the University of Kingston, inviting students to develop their own musical instruments in response to the Lucas Plan: a radical proposal developed by engineers and workers at Lucas Aerospace, who designed 150 ‘socially useful products’, from wind turbines to medical equipment, as an alternative to mass redundancies. Expanding on what ‘useful” is, students developed their own “socially useful sonic instruments”, meeting each week in the gallery to build upon their sounds and have ‘band practice/rehearsal’ style sessions in the gallery, forming the band ‘Alternative Uses’ with Lady Ludd 
The 3D Design Foundation cohort worked with Sophie to design and build four stages for the instruments to be played on throughout the exhibition based around the four phrases of Attack Decay Sustain Release (ADSR) which denote the four phases of a sound envelope. Students worked in four different groups based on each word to develop their stages, which were played and performed on throughout the exhibition and performances. 
The exhibition culminated in a live performance of the instruments as Alternative Uses in the Gallery, with future recordings and releases forthcoming.

Relief is a long-term body of work and research expanding upon the concept of ‘relief’ as both an emotional coping mechanism and a creative act. It draws parallels between personal experiences of working-class life and grief, and the wider art-historical context of relief sculpture. Engaging with relief as a multifaceted process, emotionally, how we find release, and materially, through sculptural and industrial forms, the work explores how we construct our own ‘reliefs’, both emotionally and physically.
The in-progress works were developed during a residency at The New Art Gallery Walsall, the artworks contrast personal grief with broader working-class struggles, challenging narratives around industrial histories, particularly Walsall’s leather industry and the decline of the high street, while interrogating the ‘industries’ that have replaced these trades.

Relief delves into how my family and others in working-class communities seek relief in myriad ways, while framing the historical exploitation and imperial practices tied to the industries these towns were built upon. Focusing on her hometown Walsall, once defined by its leather industry and local identity, now often romanticised, the work reveals how such histories can obscure the exploitation of workers and their role in Empire building, alongside expanding on the histories of power embedded in relief, from state propaganda to corporate branding. 

Drawing on connections with Hadfield Bridleworks, Walsall Gold Blockers, Sedgwick’s Leather and research at Walsall Archives, the residency culminated in moving-image works, sculptures, and writings that explore the many meanings of relief, from the physical act of embossing and blocking to the emotional and collective ways we seek release or relief.

Working with leather embossing and gold-blocking stamps made from corporate slogans of William Hill, where her dad worked on Walsall High Street, and IKEA (Junction 9), where her mom worked in the 1990s, she reimagines these impressions as sites of memory and labour. They have incorporated redundant corporate dies from Hadfield’s, once used to mark prestige onto surfaces and&#38;nbsp; reworked them to question how corporations shape identity and belonging.&#38;nbsp;

The works reflect on how labour, craft, and industry leave lasting impressions on place and people, entwined in heritage narratives and the fictions corporations tell, while asking how families and communities continue to find their own forms of relief amid economic precarity, shifting high streets, and global pressures. Relief moves between the personal and local to the global, tracing how these interconnected forces shape everyday lives.Thanks to:

Lady Ludd
Augmented loom for musical performance

Lady Ludd researches and explores how to repurpose and create new ‘tools’ for ‘performance’, which centres around wider histories of women* and non-binary people’s work and activism in textile production across weave, lace and knit and its connection to creative and technological developments.

Lady Ludd specifically focuses on a feminist and queer reframing of the Luddite movement, which originated in the East Midlands during the 19th Century. The Luddites objected to the rising implementation of automated textile equipment which threatened their livelihoods and Luddites destroyed machines ‘hurtful to commonality’, their protest was not against the machines, but their employers who sought to use these tools to displace workers.&#38;nbsp;The Luddites had a collective identity such as King Ludd. An overlooked collective identity within the movement was Lady Ludd – historically Lady Ludd was of many genders and taking on this mantle consciously explored gender performance and fluidity for a range of aims, many in relation to direct action.

The project resulted in the augmenting of a four shaft loom donated by the Framework Knitters Museum and collaborating with Dr. Juan Martinez Avila at the Mixed Reality Lab at The University of Nottingham, to repurpose the loom – a tool of predominantly historic feminised labour – into a musical instrument. As a form of creative and feminist technological resistance in the age of AI-based automation and shed light on how women and queer people have had to poetically “reclaim, rearrange, repurpose and rebirth” (Legacy Russell) the tools and technologies accessible to them towards strategic disruption and refusal.

Alongside this, Nottingham based maker Rosie Deegan was commissioned to design a new stand for the loom and weavers from the Notts District of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers were commissioned to design and weave a fabric for a new costume which Lady Ludd will perform in and take on tour. 

Through reframing these narratives, Lady Ludd aims to build new understandings of Luddism in order to collectively manifest a contemporary intersectional feminist Luddism for now and in the future, and to question how technology is implemented and for whom.

OUTWORK tells the stories of women* employed at Kenrick and Jefferson (K&#38;amp;J) Print Works on West Bromwich High Street. The project explores working-class womens relationship to work and social class. in West Bromwich. The project involved interviewing a cross section of K&#38;amp;J workers and researching personal and public archives, with the project mediating on how women can make space to debate what work is and could be. OUTWORK is rooted in the heritage of women’s oral storytelling, referencing howwomen’s stories are often shared anecdotally and passed down through a spoken tradition,&#38;nbsp;  
OUTWORK culminated in  a book published by Multistory Editions, outdoor exhibition and podcast of the interviews in September 2023.
The resulting book (co-designed, printed and hand bound by Joseph Lilley / Holodeck Birmingham and available as a free PDF from Multistory’s website) and the outdoor exhibition assembled images from the project participants’ personal archives; quotes from their interviews; and creative outcomes from two workshops charting the history of these working women’s lives, with a workshop hosted by Stirchley Printworks. Alongside, a new podcast produced by sound artist Dr Natalie Hyacinth and narrated by Wolverhampton City Poet Laureate (2020-2022) Emma Purshouse,

Commissioned by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Vivid Projects
‘Factories Leaving the worker’ draws on archival materials from the Trade Union Resource Centre, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery’s digital collections and contemporary footage of demolitions in the West Midlands, UK. The work explores the promises of nationalisation, the fight against privatisation of public services, alongside the legacies of Trade Unionism in the UK. The work is rooted in the concept of 'Ruins in Reverse', working with this method as a way to question the present moment: how the ‘cost of living crisis’ is intrinsically connected to neoliberal policies reaching back from the 1970’s. The work seeks to collapse temporalities and challenge the present narrative which posits our living conditions as an inevitability, but one we must continually challenge.

Break the Frame
2020Moving Image work. 
Duration: 9mins
The moving image work: Break The Frame, incorporates contemporary and traditional craft processes:&#38;nbsp; repurposed technology, puppetry, a musical score and moving image, as a tool to deconstruct the narratives around ‘progress’ in relation to histories and futures of labour practices, social class and technological develoment. Created during the first lockdown March - June 2020
